COVID-19 being short form for Coronavirus is a pandemic that is presently ravaging the entire globe and beats the wildest imaginations of scientists, researchers and even predictors the world over.
COVID-19 is a virus, viruses are man-made and were first discovered in Wuhan, China in late 2019, it was received with mixed feelings probably that as Ebola came and was fought to a standstill, went unceremoniously, with that mindset that COVID-19 will also disappear into the thin air, alas, it gets deteriorated by the day.
The case of this pandemic was first recorded in Nigeria on Friday February 27, 2020 when an Italian businessman who returned from Milan to Lagos, Nigeria was diagnosed and confirmed to have contracted the virus while Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria had the first record of five confirmed cases according to Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on April 1, 2020.
Prior to this day, the Akwa Ibom State Government had made adequate preparation to contain the dreaded disease in so many ways. Aside sensitization through the media, equipment of related hospitals with relevant machines, training of health personnel, issuing of stay-at-home-order, blocking of land, sea etc boarders to prevent unsuspected people migrating to the state indiscriminately, this in addition to setting up of the State Task Force on the restriction of movement order headed by the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Imohimi Edgal as other service Chiefs in the State serve as members.
It is on this backdrop that Century Newsfront comments Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel for such initiative, courage and resilient in taking the bull by the horn for the overall safety of Akwa Ibom citizens and her residents.
We, therefore, call on the governor to look at the plight of the poorest of the poor as well as other citizens whose livelihood are on daily labour by providing them with some relieve materials such as food items, money and other basic needs so as not to lose any citizen as a result of hunger. We also call on wealthy individuals, political representatives from local, state and federal levels to equally donate materials to members of their constituents as such a time as this, the people who voted them into power need reciprocal gesture since the means of their livelihood has been curtailed at the moment.
Citizens on their part should desist from unguarded utterances rather should pray to their God for Divine intervention. They should not see the stay-at-home-order as a means of punishment but as a means of their safety and preservation after all, the government gained nothing shutting down its entire operation and activities.
