We are ready for Reconciliation, if… – Chairmen of Conference

The Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Deacon Udom Gabriel Emmanuel has assured members of Qua Iboe Church (QIC) and that of United Evangelical Church (UEC) that will do everything within his human strength and God’s grace upon him to see to the unity of the Church of God especially his primary place of worship.

The Governor’s pledge was contain in an address sent to the church hierarchy on Tuesday October 29, 2019 at Ibom Hall, Uyo where effort to reconcile the two factions of the church by His Eminence, Pilate Dr. Sunday Mbang in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital recently.

The State Chief Executive who was represented by his Special Assistant on Religious Affairs, Rev. Daniel Akwatang said that the Church of God that stands firmly on the strong foundation, which is Jesus Christ, nothing will destabilize it for any reason as he is ready to stake everything within his human capacity for its unity and strength.

The session, which was initiated and moderated by the Prelate Emeritus of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr. Sunday Mbang with the sole aim of uniting, reconciling and creating brotherhood among members of the church. Tagged, “Devotion and general conference for Rev. Samuel Bill’s children”, Dr. Mbang himself was baptized into the Qua Iboe faith before his conversion into Methodist belief said, “it may surprise you to know that I was baptized into Qua Iboe Church in 1949, my DNA is Qua Iboe Church”.

It could be recalled that Dr. Mbang was instrumental to restoring decades of fracas also in Methodist Church Nigeria when he took over the mantle of leadership of the church in the mid 1980s. He promised membership of the two groups that if allow peace, peace will be restored to the church and that everyone will be happy at the end of the day, “by December 5, we will ensure that peace is restored to the church and thereby, EXCO of the church will be formed, by December 22, there will be thanksgiving service in Ibeno”.

The Prelate who, by God’s leading, called on the General Superintendent and Chairman of Conference of Qua Iboe Church, Nigeria, Rev. Ekpedeme Moffat Efanga and Chairman of Conference, United Evangelical Church, Rev. Samuel Udeme Ebukiba as well as the two Chairmen, Board of Trustees of the two groups, Gen, Edet Akpan, rtd and Air Vice Marshal Nsikak Eduok for short addresses. Others who were called upon for brief remarks were two people, one from each factional groups including: male elders, adult male, adult female and youth representatives alongside Professor Akpan Hogan Ekpo from Qua Iboe Church who proposed a resolution for reconciliation process to commence.

In his address, the General Superintendent and Chairman of Conference of Qua Iboe Church, Nigeria, Rev. Ekpedeme Moffat Efanga who thanked the Prelate for the initiative said that the essence of the meeting was to give permanent solution to the issues that led to the divisibility of the church, “if we are here to win, we have failed…I want to align myself totally with the submission of General Edet Akpan who said that for agreement to be reached, we must adopt the Agbor Hill, 2001”. He called on all parties to put in their swords for peace to reign.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Conference, United Evangelical Church, Rev. Samuel Udeme Ebukiba read a letter sent in to the reconciliation meeting from Mission Africa, Belfast, London. He noted that reconciliation is possible but identified shame and pride as the twin sisters that hinder people from sheathing their swords for peace and reconciliation.

In his chat with Century Newsfront, the Chairman in charge of Akwa Ibom and Cross River States men Fellowship of the United Evangelical Church, Elder Enobong Akpan himself a delegate to the conference expressed his optimism that with the ongoing reconciliatory move, peace will be restored to the church. While urging both parties to cooperate with the Prelate, advised members to continue to pray for divine intervention so that the church of God will march in unison to the Eldorado.

The event had about four hundred delegates, two hundred from each of the two groups. While leaders and Board of Trustees Chairmen and selected few from each of the two groups were appointed to meet with the Prelate for final reconciliation, which would be made public by the 5th of December, 2019.
