An International nonprofit organization committed to improving health care, education and poverty reduction across different states in Nigeria and other parts of the world, ‘Excellence and Welfare Community Scheme’, ECEWS, has named the Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Onofiok Luke as their goodwill Ambassador in Nigeria.
His appointment was announced, Monday by the Executive Director of ECEWS, Mr. Andy Eyo when he led other Management team of the body on a courtesy visit to the Speaker in the assembly complex.
In his words, Mr. Eyo said ” We are much delighted on his emergence as Speaker. He is a great youth and great leader that has been a role model to so many of us.
Last year when he was in our 14th anniversary dinner, we thoroughly enjoyed his presence and we told him that we needed his quality his character in the leadership of the House of Assembly, and today God has made it possible.
We are also here to congratulate him on his leadership; We can see that the Akwa Ibom State budget has just been passed, one of the earliest across the country. We are here to thank him because that would set the tone for the economy of the state.
ECEWS has been support the health needs of Nigerians. Over 300000 Akwa Ibomites have benefited from our health care programme”
The ECEWS boss hinted that the organization is currently working in Ebonyi, Cross River, Imo, Enugu, and Benue basically providing support to over 5000 patients in care and treatment in HIV and aids.
He also disclosed that the organization was currently working partnering some other international donor agencies, including the United Nations Population Fund to Scale up access to reproductive health in some states including. Akwa Ibom.
“Because the right honourable Speaker has been a great friend, and not only that, he has been a great friend of the poor, he has been a great friend of education, he is a man that seeks education, he is a man that seeks health care.
We are here going to request that onbehalf of the board and the directors of ECEWS, we are imploring on the Speaker to become the ECEWS goodwill Ambassador, we are going to bestow that on him today so that he can be more a voice for our effort in ensuring access to quality health care in Akwa Ibom and Nigeria, he can also be used more of a voice in the empowerment of women and children”.
“We congratulate him especially on the bill which he played a significant role in reducing stigma and discrimination in Akwa Ibom.
Mr. Speaker was able to work through that bill when he Was a member and you can imagine what he will do now that he is the Speaker of. Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly”.
Responding, the Speaker thanked ECEWS for the honour done him and pledged his readiness and the preparedness of the House of Assembly to partner the organization in its avowed determination to achieve a better society for all.
While acknowledging the role played by ECEWS, a core community service provider in the area of health care, education and poverty reduction, Rt. Hon Luke called for concerted in the fight against poverty.
He commended the organization for being in the forefront of the fight against HIV/AIDS, and assured that bill against stigmatization of persons living with HIV/AIDS which he personally sponsored in the 5th assembly as a House member in conjunction with Rt. Hon. Friday Iwok, will be revisited in the 6th assembly.
Also on the ECEWS delegation were, the Secretary of the board of directors, Mrs. Uduak Akai, Director, Programmes, Asuquo Etuk, Head of Administration and Human Resources, Modu Austin, Head, ICT, Oyomide Ogunloye and Ekom Umoh.
