… as Ikot Abasi LGA bags 11 medals in Wrestling

The second Akwa Ibom State youth Sports Festival that held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium from march 5-10, 2018 must have come and gone but the memories will continue to linker on the minds of especially those that won series of medals.
The programmes, which was the initiative of the Akwa Ibom State government to hunt for talents at the tender ages, when discovered, they are groomed, trained and send to the national space for the purposes of securing their future in the direction of their talents. These children were drawn from public primary and secondary schools across the state.
It could be recalled that contingent from Ikot Abasi local government area went home with the overall forth position. For instance, in traditional wrestling in particular, Ikot Abasi went home with eleven medals namely: seven Gold, two silver and two bronze medals in both the primary and secondary sections.
The talented children that made the day for the local government in the wrestling championshion include: Honesty Victor Akpabio, God-Day Paul Imaku, Ubong Ofonime Sam, Wisdom Ubong Nta, God’sfavour Smith Ineme and Aniebiet Godwin Etim. Others are Emmanuel Akaninyene Dan, Udeme Okon Elisha, Elijah Michael, Victory Unyime Eyo and Wisdom Emmanuel Ikoh.
Speaking to Century Newsfront after the success story recorded, the coach and Manager, Victor dorenyin Ebenezer express gratitude to God for the victory, thanked governor Udom Emmanuel for what he described as “great innovative idea in catching them young” as this according to him, will identify hidden talents for the state and country at large.
Mr. Victor dorenyin Ebenezer, himself a wrestler of repute popularly known in the wrestling world as “POWER VIC” of Akwa Ibom who won a national middle weight title in Edo State in 2016 noted that identifying the children at their tender ages and groom them will put the state ahead of other states in terms of wrestling and other sports.
“POWER VIC” who is currently seeking for sponsors to help him engage in the African Middle weight Title, which is hoping to be hosted in Akwa Ibom State called on the state and local governments, multi-national companies and public spirited individuals to invest in wrestling as it is a veritable tool in growing the economy of the state, drive tourists and place the state in the world map of sports. He promised to make Akwa Ibom proud again.
