Accounting has been described as a knowledge-based profession in view of its role in the interpretation of Finance Law.
The Accountant General of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Uwem Andrew- Essien stated this Tuesday, 21st July, 2020, while declaring open, a one – day Law and Finance Seminar, Organized by Nouveau Edge Consulting Firm for the staff of the Ministry of Finance and that of the Accountant General, at the ICT Resource Center of the Accountant General’s office.
Pastor Andrew- Essien noted that ” knowledge is a perishable commodity and should be well serviced and nourished”, adding that in view of the place of knowledge in the growth of any Organization, his office had taken up a holistic approach to the training of his staff.
Commenting on the theme of the seminar” Public Finance, Amendment, Imperatives of the Finance Act, 2019, he said it was apt considering the need to have a clearer understanding and interpretation of the Procurement Act. He sued for synergy between the Facilitators and the office of the Accountant General to help minimize issues of litigation.
Pastor Andrew-Essien who lauded the organizers on their foresight, assured that the seminar would be held regularly, especially on issues that border on Law and Accounting. The Accountant General challenged participants to ensure that the knowledge gained during the seminar is brought to bear in the discharge of their official duties.
Setting the tone for the event, the Publicity Secretary of Peoples’ Democratic Party, (PDP), and Commissioner-designate, Comrade Iniobong Ememobong said, some people have been jailed for the mistakes of others, one reason according to him, all laws that come to into existence must be properly explained. His words” two things send people to jail; accounts and Laws.
Comrade Ememobong said the establishment of the Civil Service by Government was not profit-oriented, but as a tool for the protection of Government, noting that the Civil Service cannot run like the private sector. The Publicity Secretary maintained that the expenditure and Finance of Government is very important, and must be jealously protected by Government employees.
He stated that Nouveau Edge Consulting Firm is a place where great people, with great ideas, converge to rub minds for the betterment of the society. Comrade Ememobong said he was proud of the Accountant General for giving himself to learning, noting that learning should be continuous.
One of the Resource persons, Dr. Essien Essien Akpanuko opined that the 21st century has taken everyone by storm and every Tom, Dick and Harry must be up and doing in order not to be left behind. The Publicity Secretary in appreciation of the Accountant General’s presence and commitment towards the growth of the Civil Service presented a moment to the Accountant General.
