Taxes are mandatory contributions levied on individuals or corporations by a government entity whether local, regional or national. Tax revenue finance government activities, including public works and services, such as roads and schools or programmes such as social security and medicare.
The enormous benefits, derivable from payment of taxes may have informed government insistence on payment by groups, individuals and corporations. Sad that even with this knowledge, tax evasion has become common practice especially among corporate entities. Aside collecting taxes, it is also expected that remittances be made to appropriate tax authorities.
Recently, the Director, Government Business Tax Department, Federal Inland Revenue Service, Abuja, Mr. Anthony Okonkwo and Director, General Tax Operation Group, Mr. Babajide Odubanjo alongside other Directors were in the Office of the Accountant General of Akwa Ibom State, to honour Akwa Ibom State Government for remitting taxes.
Presenting the award to Pastor Andrew-Essien, Mr. Okonkwo said, the award was in recognition of Akwa Ibom State Government’s effort at “remitting withholding and value added taxes”.
The Director, Government Business Tax Department, lauded the cordial relationship existing between the Akwa Ibom State Government and Federal Inland Revenue Service and sued for more, encouraging other States to take a cue from Akwa Ibom.
Responding, the Accountant General of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Uwem Andrew-Essien said, as a responsible Government, Akwa Ibom State under the watch of His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel will continue to be alive to its obligations. Pastor Andrew-Essien thanked Federal Inland Revenue Service for acknowledging the effort of Akwa Ibom State Government at remitting taxes.
The Accountant General assured Mr. Anthony Okonkwo of a sustained cordial relationship between Akwa Ibom State Government and FIRS for the betterment of our Nation Nigeria. The ceremony was witnessed by the HOD Fund in the Office of the Accountant General, Pastor Mfon Udoma.
