In continuation of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s directive that all illegal structures littering the state capital as well as highways within the state be removed, agencies of the state government have been busy carrying out the directive.
To this end, bulldozers accompanied by officials of the Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA) on last week moved on to the Ibom International Airport road where such structures were pulled down. As a result, all structures impeding government right-of-way on both sides of the Ibom International Airport road from the Nsit Atai junction towards the Uyo city centre were demolished.
The demolished structures included residential buildings, filling stations, shops, workshops, billboards and sign posts. All demolished structures are said to have been erected without any form of approvals or authorization from the designated government agencies hence constituted a risk to both vehicles plying the road as well as occupants of the buildings in an event of an accident.
It would be recalled that recently, the Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, Mr Ekerette Udo, had in a statement said that the governor was worried by the embarrassing state of illegal structures in public places in the state including the high-ways. The demolition, according to the UCCDA, is however still in progress.
