Accountant-general of the Federation Idris Ahmed has been suspended by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed over his alleged embezzlement of public funds to the tune of N80 billion.
Spokesman to the minister, Tanko Abdullahi confirmed his suspension from office to our correspondent yesterday. He said Mr Idris was suspended to allow for unhindered investigation of the graft charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). “Yes. He is suspended to allow for unhindered investigation into the matter,” Abdullahi said in a message to me.
As at the time of filing this report yesterday, the Minister of Finance had not appointed an acting Accountant-general to preside over the affairs of the Treasury House. Her spokesman said she was yet to nominate an officer in acting capacity, a development that could slow down the running of the office.
The embattled AGF was supposed to leave office last year after clocking the mandatory 60 years of age as required by law. Despite calls by union members and other stakeholders, the Buhari-led administration refused to remove him from office. He is still serving a second term in office.
