The Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) will on August 2, 2019 go to the polls to elect a new executive to pilot its affairs for the next 3 years. This is sacrosanct and therefore means that the 2 term chairman, Elder Patrick Albert will that day vacate his seat for a new chairman.
Names of the aspirants indicate that some of them fall in the class of the not-too-young to rule while others though not old are energetic and capable to prove their mettle. Prior to this, the outgoing council leadership had prepared a level playground for a peaceful exercise. Among it was the setting up of the credentials committee for the smooth running of the 7th triennial conference/election with another body made up of former chairmen of the council to serve as an advisory organism.
In the light of this, the Century Newsfront Newspaper wishes the union a successful and peaceful exercise bearing in mind the numerous achievements of the outgoing executive council under the chairmanship of Elder Patrick Albert. We also wish the aspirants vying for the seven executive offices well and successful electioneering campaigns. It is our opinion that the outgoing Patrick Albert administration had laid and put up so many lives touching and enduring programmes on ground and hope that the incoming council leadership should come with the spirit of maintenance culture as well as the spirit of continuation so that the purpose in which these programmes were set up would not be defeated after all, government is continuum.
Again, they should work to ensure that welfare of members are well taken care of while they in conjunction with the state government should make the Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance scheme for journalists see the lights of the day as this had so long been put inside the cooler.
A pledge by the Chairman of Election Committee, Comrade Abasifreke Effiong that they would be fair to all participating aspirants is not in doubt and so we in the Century Newsfront wish the committee all the luck to ensure that those coming would maintain the cordial relationship created by the outgoing executive with the members as well as maintaining a high ethical standard. Finally, we urge all members to conduct themselves well as gentlemen during the election and serve as a role model for other Nigerians during elections.
