Printing industry especially in Africa over the years relied on varied forms of printing, ranging the analog use of Heidelberg Kord, Gestetner in the 19th century to the 3D printing, in full three-dimensional printing with the rotary press in the early 20th Century. The rotary press came to dominate the high-speed newspaper field, but the flatbed press, having a flatbed to hold the type and either a reciprocating platen or a cylinder to hold the paper, continued to be used for job printing.

The latest technology, according to Eiji Ota, Business Unit Director, Canon Central and North Africa explained that the technology provides connectivity, security, and workflow technology to help ensure efficiency, “we are doing this by transitioning from offset to digital printing. Canon prioritises our customers’ needs in everything we do, including providing expert advice on how to reimagine their business opportunities”.
Speaking to Newsmen recently after the launch of the latest printing technology, a professional printer and Chairman, Association of Professional Printers in Akwa Ibom, Chief Michael Archibong lauded Canon Technology for such innovation. He expressed the hope that with the emergence of the technology, printing industry will be given its pride of place.
The printing guru identified availability and cost of the product as the motivating factor, “in as much as we in Africa appreciate this technological innovation, it will not benefit us if we only read on the news, see the pictures but it’s not available to us. Methink, if the company could establish a depot in Nigeria, it will be a great booster both to us, the users and the manufacturers. Aside that, no matter who good a product may be, if the cost price is not affordable, it will not make any sense”.
Others who spoke said that the choice of North and Central Africa is good but observed that Nigeria and other African countries with large populations could serve the purpose and create a much better platform for sales of the product, “Nigeria has the population and the market, let the company move down to Nigeria and establish either a depot of an assembling plant to bring the product closer to the people and you will be amazed of the turnover. Southern part of Africa is another huge market the manufacturer should also consider in their planning and marketing strategy”, the source noted.
