CITN Urges Fellows To Prepare For Opportunities, Challenges

The Special Adviser to the Governor of Kano State on internally generated revenue, Muhammad Saleh, has urged the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria’s new fellowship awardees to take conferment as a challenge and not just a title.

He spoke at the fellowship award ceremony of the Chartered Institute of Taxation was held in Lagos.

Saleh, who is also a member of the CITN said, “Being a fellow of the institute would fetch you a lot of opportunities in both private practice and government, but be mindful that opportunities are always with greater challenges. I wish you a fruitful engagement and a most rewarding success.”

He congratulated the awardees of this year’s CITN fellowship, and also to congratulate the CITN for successfully organising this event, in order to reward its associate members who have distinguished themselves in the area of taxation and tax practice.

Saleh who was the keynote speaker spoke on the importance of taxation as an important tool for revenue mobilisation. He said that it was critical for achieving overall development goals, as well as achieving the overall national fiscal space to finance necessary expenditure to enable sustainable development. “Taxation has of today, has become the mainstay of Federal Government source of revenue as well as some state governments, ranked above revenues from oil rents,” he said.

While speaking, he further commended the leadership of the institute for spearheading the recent development of engagements with the Federal Inland Revenue Service which hitherto, gave more relevance to members of the institute in tax practice in Nigeria.

He noted that the pronouncement by FIRST that all audited accounts must be certified and sealed by CITN, with effect from October 2022, was one of the greatest achievements and protection to the tax practitioners, since inception of the institute.

While noting that a lot of researches in the area of taxation had been tapped from the informal sector businesses, he urged the institute to champion development of processes and mechanisms for proper collection of taxes from informal businesses. He encouraged the prospective fellowship awardees of the institute to take the conferment as challenge and not a fashion or only a title.
