The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Olatoye Durosinmi has said that 2023 general elections in Akwa Ibom State would be the freest if citizens conducted themselves in the most peaceful manner.

The Commissioner made this assertion to stakeholders of Itu during his ongoing tour of police Divisions and formations ahead of the 2023 general elections. He noted that if everyone sees election as a means of choosing leaders not war, the acknowledgment of that fact is a serious breakthrough in the mind.

CP Durosinmi who was sermonizing his message to the people of Itu, maintained that elections will come and go but the people and their relationships will ever remain, “if because of an election, you maim your brother, or destroy the property of your brother or cause any violent behaviour, certainly that election will be over and you will come back to see your brother, how will you feel to see someone that you inflicted pains or wounds on because of election?” he queried.

The commissioner, accompanied by other senior Police Officers from the State Headquarters call on all stakeholders to maintain peaceful co-existence before, during and after the coming elections as this, according to him will ensure a peaceful communal living devoid of resentment and acrimony.

In his remarks, a Youth President in the area, Mr. Hanson John thanked the Commissioner for his fatherly advice, promised to maintain peace before, during and after the elections. He added that he will do everything within his power to ensure that peace reigns in Itu local government area.

Also speaking, a Community Leader in the area, Apostle George Damson while eulogizing the good works of the DPO, CSP Celestine Umeh said that the Commissioner should not redeploy the DPO who according to him has labored to restore peace in the area and dignity of the Nigerian Police in Itu. He appealed for the establishment of police posts in the hinterlands that is more than five kilometers aware from the station to curb excesses of young people. The visit featured the commissioner’s unveiling of the new security post built by DPO, CSP Celestine Umeh.
