The state government has given all all illegal occupants of the Mass Housing Estates at Idu Uruan and Ikot Ekpene Seven days to vacate the buldings or risk eviction.
The commissioner for Housing and Urban Renewal, Prince Enobong Uwah, gave the directive in Uyo while interacting with representatives of the resource persons of the Mass Housing Estates at Idu-Uruan, Ikot Ekpene and Eket. Prince Uwah noted that the evacuation was necessary because some of the estates were gradually turning into criminal hideouts.
The commissioner assured the representatives of the resource persons that the government was aware of their complaints including issues of non-remittance of financial commitments, security at the estates as well as charges by some financial institutions, stressing that after proper audits and inspection were completed on the estates, the ministry would relate with them.
Prince Uwah however emphasized that while government would pay for the houses that were completed, it would not condone a situation where resource persons that were mobilized do not accomplish projects commensurate with funds paid to them.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Renewal, Dr Mrs Valerie Obot commended the representatives of the resource persons for their patience and organization and assured them that the government would look into their requests.
Briefing the commissioner on the state of the Mass Housing Projects at Idu-Uruan, Ikot Ekpene and Eket, the secretary of the forum of resource persons, Dr Ignatius Edet said many of the houses had reached 80 percent completion and promised that the resource persons would promptly deliver on the remaning aspects of the project.
Dr Edet also lauded the government for prioritizing proper accommodation for its citizens, noting that the distribution of the estates in the 3 senatorial districts shows the good intentions of government and prayed God to grant Governor Udom Emmanuel the grace to implement all the life touching projects he has planned for Akwa Ibom people.
