Disaster: Flood Renders Residents Homeless In Uyo

     Residents of Tabernacle Lane, Uyo are crying for help as flood swept properties worth millions of naira including poultry farms and other business concerns.

       Narrating his ordeals to Century Newsfront, Mr. Effiong Umoh, one of the residents and a poultry farmer said that the torrential rain that fell on the evening of Wednesday June 4, 2019 between 7pm to about 9pm affected their area. He further explained that the flood situation was compounded when the ongoing construction of the Tabernacle road in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital where flood water was channeled to their community without any remedial measure. He decried loses he incurred as his birds have died in the circumstance of the flood. He also expressed his fear about further damage to his house as the drainage has cracked the wall of his house, the fence and the suck away broken.

        Also counting her ordeals, Mrs. Margret Usanga said her family members has nowhere to go to lay their heads as all the neighbouring compounds have been over taken by flood. A trader whose goods had goods had been destroyed by the flood, Mrs. Enobong John pleaded for government intervention to rescue the situation as her source for livelihood had been shattered.

         Mr Ifiok Usanga told Century Newsfront efforts to see the state governor at the Government House proved abortive yesterday Thursday as they were not allowed into the gate but rather told to write to the Governor through ministry of works as against the urgency of their predicament. He therefore called on the government for quick intervention. Mr. Usanga while also trying to explain the cause of the flood referred it to the abandoned road construction without gutter or any channel for passage of water of the Tabernacle road, off Ikot Ekpene road, which had been completed and commissioned, “They did not even open any gutter for water to pass and we are begging them to just make gutters in this community”.
