Police Reports, Stakeholders Exonerate Gov Udom Emmanuel
…Stop blaming Udom for your actions – APC Chieftain
By Saviour Ekpe
The recent police report on the crises experienced for some time now in Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun Local Government Area as well as the Stakeholders position on the matter have exonerated Governor Udom Emmanuel of being part of the genesis of the crises thereby abetting insurgency in the area as erroneously claimed in some quarters.
One of the police reports presented to Journalist by the Commissioner of Police, CP Adeyeni Samuel Ogunjemilusi, read “in the past two years, Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun Local Government Areas of the State have witnessed upsurge in criminality and brigandage due to the activities of the notorious criminal group led by Akaninyene Jumbo A.K.A ISO AKPAFID, “joint Operations of the Security Agencies in the State led to the death of ISO AKPAFID on 15 January 2018. The people’s jubilation that followed was however cut short by the emergence of a wicked and brutal self-crowned successor to Iso Akpafid, who adopted the title STAINLESS. Successive stainless-led other hoodlums on a revenge mission and unleashed terror on Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun Local Government Areas by killing, maiming, raping, kidnapping, issuing of threat letters and burning of houses indiscriminately”. Disturbed by this ugly development, the Security Agencies in the State re-strategized and mounted massive operations against the criminal gang.
This led to the arrest of many of the hoodlums who in spite of numerous appeals refused to surrender their weapons and embrace peace, “our effort received a boost at about 2230hours of yesterday, 18 April 2018 with the death of the current and most brutal gang leader, known as stainless by his victims but whose real name is Isaac, but known to the Security Community and close aides as BAGGY SHORT, after serious exchange of gun fire, we have chosen to parade his corpse to demystify his invisibility and re-assure the people of Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun of their safety to encourage those who have fled the area to return home”.
Another police report contained in press briefing text by the Deputy Commissioner of Police DCP Yekini Ajoku reads, “ the command has today, being the 6th of August, 2018 at about 4.30am, in a joint operation recorded another milestone in her fight against crime and criminality in Akwa Ibom State and in Etim Ekpo in particular, a Team of “Operation purge” in Etim Ekpo during exchange of gun fire with kidnappers, gunned down one Emmanuel Ime Jumbo A.K.A KI, a Notorious Kidnapper and 2nd – in – command to one Unyime Akpan A.K.A Overcomer, responsible for the Murders, Kidnappings and Robberies around Eim Ekpo and Ukanafun Local Government Areas and were part of those responsible for the attack on the joint task force stationed at Iwukem in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area recently … rescued five persons”.
Yet another police report presented as press briefing text by the Police Public Relation Officer, Odiko Macdon on 20th August 2018 reads “ I am pleased to once again bring you an update of our progress in Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun Local Government Areas. You will recall that the Commissioner of Police Akwa Ibom State briefed you on Saturday, 18th August 2018 of the rescues of nine kidnapped victims at Ukanafun who were rescued from their abductors including an INEC Staff, Otobong Sylvester who was kidnapped in the Month of June, 2018, today , I am delighted to inform you that barely 24 hours after, on Sunday, the 19th of August, 2018, men of “Operation purge” engaged the hoodlums in a fierce shoot-out in their camp, leading to the death of a gang member whose identity is unknown and the recovery of a G3 rifle with 19 rounds of live ammunition. The following persons who were kidnapped from Apostolic Faith Church at NKEK at about 9pm while having a tarry night and others from homes and taken to their deadly came in Okoyo were rescued in the said operation…. Let me assure the good people of Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun and every Akwa Ibomite that the command is committed to the restoration of peace, security and order in Etim Ekpo, Ukanafun and every part of the State”. In all these reports, the police end with “let me use this opportunity to thank the Government and people of Akwa Ibom State for their support…”
On their part, the stakeholders in Etim Ekpo/Ukanafun Local Government Areas have called for a holistic action to stop the incessant cult related killings in the areas, which has claimed more than a hundred lives. The Stakeholders who spoke on behalf of Youths, Women, Religious Organizations and the Traditional Institution, maintained that the crises remain a cult war and not a political one as claimed in some quarters. With all these reports, one then wonders why a senior citizen, former governor and serving Senator should have said that “insurgency has crossed from Benue to Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun in Akwa Ibom state without anything being done about it by the State Government”.
The State Governor, Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel on this part, has given the necessary support to the security agents to operate in the two Local Government Areas as seen in the numerous breakthroughs by the police even as he described the crises as being sponsored. The Governor has also held interactive session with the people donated relief materials to the residents of villages displaced by the crises and called for immediate stop of what he described as “senseless killing of innocent citizens”.
Speaking to our reporter in Uyo, a Chieftain of All Progressive Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State said, “we should not bring bad politics into issues of security, this is the first time in this State after Obong Victor Attah that the State is witnessing unprecedented peace, so if somebody has decided to sponsor cult activities in his senatorial district for reasons known to him, Mr. Udom Emmanuel should be left alone.”.
The APC Chieftain who refused to be named added, “the fact that Governor Udom Emmanuel is a member of the PDP should not blind the eyes of APC members in the State to see what the Governor is doing especially in Security, I repeat Security. We used to disguise and sleep in different hotels in this Uyo between 2007 and 2015, many people refused to come home, there was heavy killing, kidnapping, burning of property, raping of prominent peoples’ wives, we, the old members of ACN to APC, we admire Udom’s system of security in the State, we can now sleep in our homes even with doors open, but this does not mean that we will not challenge Udom in 2019 election”.
