Four Trapped As Four-Story Building Collapses In Uyo

A four-story building in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital has been reportedly collapsed today at about 5:30pm with four people trapped.

The building was built for a hotel business that was under construction at Iman Street along Aka Road in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The collapsed building fell on a nearby bungalow with four occupants, according to an eyewitness, one of the occupants narrowly escaped while the other three, at the time of this report were yet to be rescued though our source said that the State Ministry of Works has brought in heavy equipment from Hensek and Julius Berger to the scene of the incident added that the operators have all gone to resume the rescue operation tomorrow.

Speaking to Century Newsfront, the State Director of the Akwa Ibom State Fire Service, Bldr Ubong Umoh said they are doing their best to rescue the trapped persons. He noted that the effort is a contributed one as his office and that of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other agencies of the state government are working assiduously to rescue the victims.

In his update on the incident, the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade Ini Ememobong said that “All Critical rescue and security agencies (Police, DSS, Fire Service) are on the ground with technical support from some construction Companies (Julius Berger and Amitek). Secretary to State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Bassey Okon and other Government officials are at the scene. Four persons were rescued and taken to the Hospital. Rescue operations are still ongoing to rescue more”.
