…Says NDDC Forensic Audit is Corruption Fight Success Story of PMB
By Saviour Ekpe
A socio-political and socio-cultural group in the Niger Delta, Supreme Council of Niger Delta Forum for Conscience and Development has in a general congress sent a strong-worded letter to President Muhammadu Buhari.
The open letter, which was captioned, “Open Letter to President Muhammadu Buhari – Who is Afraid of NDDC Forensic Audit?” dated Friday July 24, 2020 jointly signed by its Chairman, Obong (Comrade) Ifot Nathaniel Ifot and Secretary-General, Dr. Duncan Osagie and made available to Century Newsfront indicated that the meeting was held in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital with over one hundred participants in attendance with strict adherence to the COVID-19 physical distancing protocol had in a nine-point resolution decried the lack of development of the region adding that corruption by past leaders of the commission is the major reason and commend President Buhari for taking a bold step in addressing the agelong corruption, which according to them, if the president is not firm on the forensic audit exercise, maybe distracted and derailed on what they termed as good and sincere efforts of the president, “We sincerely commend you, President Muhammadu Buhari for your commitment and consistent fight against corruption in Nigeria, which has attracted the commendation of the international community. Please continue in your good work for we are solidly behind you and your government…Your determination for the forensic audit of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is a welcome development and the best step in the right direction. It is on record that the past 19 years of NDDC operation, different leaders of the commission have been appointed to pilot the affairs of the commission and many water have passed under the bridge and could neither substantially meet the yearning of the people nor meet up with the objective of establishing the commission. This crop of people will do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to stall the process using all available persons who must have benefited in one way or the other to frustrate the effort so as to cover their corrupt practices”.
The group noted with satisfaction the activities of the Minister of the Niger Delta Ministry, Sen. Godswill Akpabio for putting his best to transform the region evident in the two notable achievements so far that saved billions of Naira, “example could be drawn from the satisfaction the people of Akwa Ibom State had during Sen. Godswill Akpabio’s sincere and competent leadership for eight years as governor of which his legacy projects are still speaking for him till today. We, therefore, call on you, Mr. President to continue to give Sen. Akpabio a free hand of fellowship that you have done already for him to inject his transformational leadership prowess in the Niger Delta as he is interpreting your visions and dreams for the region into reality…Evidently Your Excellency, the Honourable Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. (Dr.) Godswill Obot Akpabio has successfully completed the NDDC headquarters’ building in Port Harcourt and also purchased 90 official cars for the Commission through your approval thereby serving billions of naira annually from the commission’s covers”.
The organization, however, called on the president to ignore unguarded comments and unnecessary side talks but encourage Sen. Akpabio to continue to do what he knows to do best as long as the development of Niger Delta is concerned, “Permit us Mr. President to advice that you encourage the Honourable Minister of the Niger Delta Ministry, Sen. (Dr.) Godswill Obot Akpabio to be patience with his critics as any true and determined leader must be willing and ready to receive blows from a lethargic opposition…We hereby pass votes of confidence on President Muhammadu Buhari for his incorruptible stance on Corruption in Nigeria and Sen. Godswill Akpabio for his ability to interpret the dreams and visions of the President for the Niger Delta into reality”.
