We will resist vehemently any plot to rig election

By Blessing Iyaak

A foremost socio-political organization in the state, Ibom Patriots has made an avowed determination to resist any group, individual or institution with plans to rig the 2019 general election that may abort the will of the people of Akwa Ibom State.

The group made this known in a press conference in Uyo at the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press centre, Information Drive last week. The address that contained the position of the body, which was read by its Chancellor, Obong Bassey Inuaeyen and made available to Century Newsfront reads in part, “we enjoin every political part to freely and democratically canvass for votes in every port of the state unhindered. What will be vehemently resisted is the manifestation of the loud boast that any defection in Akwa Ibom state will upset the traditional political equation of the state on the basis of the thickening plot to massively rig the 2019 General Elections in justification of the misplaced electoral worth of some of the major defectors. We repeat this, we will vehemently resist and it shall not stand”.

The Pan-Akwa Ibom Patriotic Platform, which is made up of top former and serving political gladiators in the state and a cross section of members in attendance said that governor Udom Emmanuel has performed beyond expectation, thereby wondered why people should be mischievous by not keying in to ensuring the state moves forward. The group noted that the political norm imbibed in the state for a performing governor to lead for two terms of eight years is not negotiable, maintained that equity and fair play should be the guiding principles of any Democratic arrangement. they observed that Arc. Obong Victor Attah from Uyo Senatorial District served two terms from 1999-2007. Chief Godswill Akpabio from Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District also served for two terms from 2007-2015 and wondered why common political calculus would not play out for Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel from Eket Senatorial District to be effortless elected for second term in 2019 in view of his performances.

Ibom Patriots observed that the recent defection to the APC by the former governor of the state should not cause any political upheaval noted that the former governor took personal decision, which should not and cannot affect the state, “Since the wave of Party switches at the National Assembly and across the country arrive Akwa Ibom State with the defection of distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, OON, the Former Senate Minority Leader, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Party (APC) two weeks ago, the Akwa Ibom polity has been rife with sundry speculations and permutations, both good and bad. The noise level should be understood from the premise that the distinguished Senator Akpabio is what both Akwa Ibom State and Peoples Democratic Party made him, raising him with unhindered opportunities from grass to grace. From relatively unknown circumstances, His Excellency, Senator Akpabio was appointed by the PDP Government of His Excellency, Obong Victor Attah to serve as a member of the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council from 2003 to 2007. From 2007 to 2015, both Akwa Ibom State and the PDP afforded His Excellency; Senator Akpabio enhanced opportunity in life as a full-term Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State. Thereafter, the PDP and the good people of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District provided him with an enhanced chance to be Senator in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria where he was again, honoured by his Party, the PDP as the Leader of Opposition, the Minority Leader of the Senate from 2015 until 8th August 2018 when he switched over to the APC”.

While they pledged their unflinching to governor Emmanuel, called on the people of the state to continue in support of the state governor, “we wish to use this opportunity to appeal to our people in Akwa Ibom State to remain calm and steadfast in their support for His Excellency, Deacon Udom Emmanuel, together we shall overcome”.
