Embarks on Free Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure Test; Diabetes Risk Assessment Today in Uyo, Itu, Ibiono Ibom, Uruan & Ukanafun LGAs
As part of activities to mark World Diabetes Day, the International Association of Lions Clubs, District 404A2 Nigeria led by Lion Lynda Odu-Okpeseyi as the District Governor mobilised lions across the country in states within her District to carry out Diabetes Awareness Road Walk on Saturday 13th November 2021 along major roads in many cities and states in Nigeria with the theme: Access to Diabetes Care, if not now, when?
In Akwa Ibom State, numerous lions from various lions clubs that constitute Region 8 in Uyo led by the Region Chairperson, Lion Unwana Akpan and the District Coordinator on Diabetes in the region Lion Dr Ibiok Usendiah, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital embarked upon the road walk from Ibom Plaza through Aka Rd terminating at Ibom Hall, IBB Way.
Fliers carrying information about Diabetes were shared with various road users during the exercise including verbal enlightenment using public address systems to inform members of the public about venues for free blood sugar screening holding at six designated Primary Health Centres in the Region.
A release signed by the Region 8 Diabetes Coordinator, Dr Ibiok Usendiah and made available to Century Newsfront indicates that the Coordinator expressed satisfaction with the level of enlightenment carried out and appealed to members of the public to turn out for the screening exercise. The Region Chairperson, Lion Unwana Akpan thanked all the lions for their commitment to the project and for coming out en-masse for the road walk.
The Free Blood Sugar Check, Diabetes Risk Assessment and Free Blood Pressure check will hold on Monday 15th November 2021 starting by 7.30am at the following centres: Maternal and Child Health Centre, Wellington Bassey Way, Uyo. Supervising Club is Uyo Diamond Lions Club; Primary Health Centre, Uruan st, Ewet, Uyo. Supervising Club: Uyo Metropolitan lions club and Primary Health Centre, Western Itam by Itam main market, Uyo Capital City.
Supervising club: Ibiono Ibom Royal Lions Club. Others are Primary Health Centre, Mbak, ITU Local Government Headquarters; Supervising Club: Uyo Shelter Afrique Lions Club; Primary Health Centre, Ndon Ebom, Uruan LGA. Supervising Club: Uyo Oriental Lions Club and Primary Health Centre, Nsehe, Ukanafun LGA, Supervising Club: Uyo Lions Club.
Residents of the localities are hereby encouraged to turn up en masse for the screening exercise. Health workers in the various health centres were duly trained by the lions club during the previous week in preparation for the exercise. Medical Doctors have been assigned by the Lions Region Coordinator to each of the designated health centres to assist in the exercise.
