The Man, Aniekan Umanah

On Monday, July 6, 2015, Akwa Ibom State Governor, His Excellency, Mr.  Udom Emmanuel, inaugurated his Executive Council, made up of 20 Commissioners and two Special Advisers. Mr. Aniekan Umanah, FNIM, made the team and returned as Commissioner for Information and Communications.

The quintessential image maker began his academic pursuit at Bishop Clark’s Primary School, Abak, (FSLC);  Lutheran High School, Obot Idim, (WASC); University of Cross River State (University of Uyo) where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in History and International Studies. He proceeded to the Nigerian Institute of Journalism Lagos, and bagged a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Public Relations. He holds an APCON diploma in Advertising.

Mr. Umanah started his Journalism career  as a Reporter with the Outlook Newspapers, Enugu, in 1989, served as a Government House Correspondent at the Lion Building, Enugu in 1990. He proceeded to Newswatch Magazine in 1991, where he served meritoriously for 12 years traversing various editorial and management positions. He co-founded Millennium Choice Technologies in 2003 and assisted in driving ICT initiatives for some States and Federal Government Agencies. He later founded the African Media Network; was Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the Governance Gazette, Chairman/CEO of Executive Options Media  Limited, an Integrated Marketing Communication outfit.

Aniekan Umanah was a member, Presidential Debate Council, 1998, Media Partner, CNBC Africa, Media Partner, Rothmans of Pallmal, UK, Media Partner, Celtel Nigeria, Media Partner, (Destination Marketing) – Tinapa  Business Resort. Mr. Umanah is a United Nations Ambassadors for Peace; Fellow Nigeria Institute of Management, Fellow Chartered Institute of Leadership, Member Nigeria Institute of Journalism, Member Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Member, Nigeria Guild of Editors, Member, Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria, and Member, Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria.

He was appointed Honourable Commissioner for Information and Communications in the immediate past administration. In this Capacity, Mr. Umanah drove the transformation in Information Sector of the State and brought  innovations that propelled the State’s image from a paltry 32% Gross positive rating to 89% positive rating across National and Global Media.

Umanah has attended severally International and Local Executive, Leadership and Governance training programs and has to his credit over 11 publications, and over 670 articles and more than 8,340 minutes of electronic media productions. He is married to Maureen, and is blessed with Four children
