My advent into politics was to change the cause of practice – Akan Okon

A member of the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council and Honourable Commissioner for Housing and Special Duties, Mr. Akan Okon has explained his commitment to play politics according to the rule of the game.

He said this in his Uyo residence when a group under the aegis of Itu Media Professionals’ Forum (IMPF) paid him a visit recently. He said that politics is meaningful if played according to the set rule. The Commissioner noted that when he came into politics courtesy of the magnanimity of Governor Udom Emmanuel, he observed some level of impunity, cheat, deprivation of people’s right, nepotism, abuse and mis-use of political powers and he vowed to himself that as a Christian, he will discharge the sacred duties that he swore during his swearing in the government by restoring people’s right and privileges.

The banker turned politician noted with delight that he has successfully reshape the political gamut of Itu Local government area, “Itu local government area is filled with highly intellectuals but I was surprised that people leading these intellectuals were not educated and I promised myself that I will change such practice and we are doing that to the best of our ability. Aside that, there is one ward in Itu, particularly ward two, no indigene has ever led that ward before, we have corrected all that, that is why there is peace and tranquility in Itu local government area today, this is why a lot of people do not like me but I am determined to do the right thing”.

The Commissioner also reiterated his commitment to ensure that Governor Udom Emmanuel returns to Hill Top Mansion come 2019. He called on the group to focus their attention to publicizing and selling the activities of Udom Emmanuel to the whole world and support the governor re-emergence, “my avowed commitment to the course of Governor Udom Emmanuel is not as a result of my intimacy with him. Actually, for the past 35 years, I have had a cordial working relationship with His Excellency, but I am committed to him because of his commitment to humanity, social infrastructure, human development, provision of basic amenities that has direct bearing to the generality of the populace and changing the cause of playing politics in Nigeria”.

Earlier in their address, the Itu Media Professionals’ Forum (IMPF) led by its Coordinator, Pastor Saviour Ekpe said that the visit was part of their familiarity visit to Itu sons and daughters in public office with a view to creating partnership to chart a common cause of development of Itu local government and her citizens.

Saviour Ekpe, who is the State Auditor of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Editor-in-Chief of Newsfront Newspapers called for partnership between the Commissioner, his Ministry and Itu Media Professionals’ Forum. He noted that an empowered group will stand stronger in the support of Governor Udom’s 2019 ambition. The visit was accompanied by a cross section of members of the group.
