Yenagoa—Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, on Saturday, gave an insight on his administration’s effort in repositioning the state infrastructure and economy.
Diri, in a live media chat held to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, said the urban renewal drive of his administration is part of plans to make the state more attractive to investors.
In a press statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, Diri noted that the urban renewal drive has restored sanity in areas such as Swali, Kpansia and Tombia-Etegwe. Diri also clarified an earlier report that the state got N38.4 billion refund from the Federal Government.
He explained that the actual amount is N27.5 billion and the money has been committed to the Yenagoa-Oporoma road project, Sagbama-Ekeremor road project, Opolo/AIT-Igbogene ring road project, the dualised Glory Drive-Onopa road project, the Nembe unity bridge project and the installation of street lights in the state capital, among others.
He also announced the commencement of commercial flights at the state-owned International airport in partnership with United Nigeria Airlines by July 2021. Diri, in response to the Federal Government’s move to revive cattle grazing routes in the country, said Bayelsa does not have any cattle grazing route.
“For us, there are no cattle grazing routes in Bayelsa State. Our people are traditionally and occupationally fishermen. The idea of cattle grazing routes in Bayelsa is very strange to us in this part of the country.
“There may be cattle grazing routes in the north, but what is applicable in the north may not apply to us in the south. I don’t want to believe we are running a unitary system of government,” Diri said.
