The recent Not too Young to run bill signed into Law by President Muhammadu Buhari has thrown more light on the definition and meaning of democracy, a system of government practiced in Nigeria. The system is a government of the People for the people and by the people. The people here include the young and the old as well as the male and the female.
In the past, it had always seemed to be all years of age until the women started to seek for a thirty five (35) percent gender representation in the governance. This gave women the opportunities to serve as local government chairpersons, Commissioners, Deputy Governors and Ministers among other important positions in governance. The recently signed into law of a bill coded “Not too young to run” received the blessings of many Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora with some declaring that Nigeria has now got a free and real democracy. They opined that for the Youth to be given a place in the governance is a welcome development maintaining that truly fresh and young blood to rejuvenate the country.
Against this backdrop, Century Newsfront Newspapers joins broad minded Nigerians and non Nigerians in the nation and in the Diaspora and thanking the President for signing this bill into law. We quickly add that the Youth should abide by the advice of Mr. President not to rush for any position now but to understudy the system for a while. It is hoped that this should be the words of a Caring and Loving Father to a Child considering the many social ills attesting the nation now. We also like to borrow a leaf from one of the Works of Shakespeare entitled, “Macbeth” which Stated, “to be thus is nothing but to be safely thus ” and again, Still in same work, he Said and Cautioned that it is the bright day that brings forth the adder. These few lines from Shakespeare Work attest to the advice by the President to the Youth to hang on till the ground is leveled so that they can be able to operate well.
This too tried to guard against an age long Sayings that “Idung ama Ofon, ikpo owo emum ukara ekama, odo ama odiok ekaba ukara eno ntok eyen” meaning when the country is good, the big men hold tight to the governance but when it is otherwise they hand over to the Youth. In the light of this, let the old the Young, man and woman work together for the benefit of all in accordance with what democracy stands for.
The old should not see it as an opportunity to overwhelm the youth in power and the youth should not see it as an opportunity to prove to the old that he or she is blessed and better than the old. The system as Proposed and Signed into law is all inclusive and not selective and whoever wants or would want to make a short Cut has or would have himself or herself to blame as the law according to the gospel of Buhari will or would not spare anybody.
