The Federal Commissioner, National Population Commission (NPC), Akwa Ibom State, Engr. Benedict Ukpong has applauded the Akwa State Governor on the cooperation and support given to staffers of the commission during the Enumeration Area Demarcation exercise in the state.

The Federal Commissioner made this commendation during a sensitization workshop for the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) in the state recently. He noted that the successes so far recorded are attributed to the effort of the governor, “let me at this point, formally acknowledge and appreciate His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel for his concern and support of the commission’s activities in the state. His intervention in the EAD exercise led to the remarkable success achieved in the demarcation of the other 27 local government areas in the state”.

The Okete Okete Oro noted with delight that the forthcoming Population and Housing Census in Nigeria would be done scientifically to meet the world’s best practice, “it is the desire of the commission to deliver to the nation an accurate, reliable, accepted and verifiable census and the EAD exercise will provide the framework for this. The Enumeration Area Demarcation is gradually getting to the end, all over the country and the commission is working assiduously to ensure that it is carried out meticulously, professionally and scientifically, leveraging on contemporary technology”.

Chief Benedict Ukpong, a one time Deputy Governorship candidate in the state expressed the hope that the result of the EAD exercise will not only be used by the National Population Commission but the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to create more electoral wards, while the MDAs, research Institutions and international agencies will use data collected in the entire exercise for economic and financial planning and execution, “the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is also involved in a special arrangement with the National Population Commission (NPC) in which the NPC is assisting INEC to create a digitized map of INEC registration areas (wards)for the first time as part of the EAD. This will ensure a digital delineation and documentation of ward boundaries which will positively impact the future elections in the state and country…in addition to being the foundation for the census, the national sample frame for surveys in the country is created from the EAD. The sample frame derived from the EAD is the one that is used by all data collecting organizations, including MDAs and research Institutions. Furthermore, the frame is also used by international agencies including the IMF and the World Bank to monitor the economic and financial performance of states and country as a whole”.

Speaking on a telephone interview, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade Ini Ememobong said that the state governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel is passionate about the population and housing census. He noted that the support given to the commission by the state chief Executive will continue as it cannot be compared to the expected benefit that would be derived from the exercise. The Information Commissioner added that the state government will continue to give necessary assistance to ensure the success of the exercise.

The state Director, National Population Commission (NPC), Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Emmanuel Edem explained that the essence of the Enumeration Area Demarcation exercise is to demarcate and further breakdown in smaller units villages and communities to enable the commission to carry out effective enumeration during the census, “the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) is basically the division of an area or locality into smaller units that would be covered conveniently by a team of enumerators during the census period”.

Mr. Edem said that the commission has deployed the most recent technology for the exercise, “it is important to state here that the latest technology is being deployed for this EAD exercise, including the use of very high-resolution satellite imaginaries as base maps, the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) for geo-referencing and the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) for data management. Also, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), which are hand-held computer devices/tablets that include computer software for population estimates are to be used for data capture in the field”.

Speaking to Century Newsfront, the State Director noted that the commission is currently on Enumeration Area Demarcation phase 16 with Itu, Ikono, Uyo 1 and Oron. He explained that they have so far, covered 27 local government areas added that phase 27, which is the last phase will be in October, 2021. He called on Nigerians in general and the people of Akwa Ibom state, in particular, to avail themselves of the opportunity of getting the right population statistics. He also called on the people to give NPC officials access to their compounds for the EAD.

It could be recalled that the last census exercise carried out in Nigeria was the 2006, the National census that put Nigeria population at one hundred and forty million. However, the current population of Nigeria is 211,800,945 as of Friday, August 13, 2021, based on Worldometer elaboration of the latest United Nations data.

According to Worldometer, the Current World Population stands at 7,885,939,783 as of Friday, August 13, 2021. With this figure, Nigeria is ranked number seven in the world population statistics. The forthcoming national census will afford Nigeria the opportunity of through direct headcount, know the real figures of her population including the number of buildings in the country.
