NUJ National Triennial conference

The opening ceremony of the triennial delegate conference of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) holding in Abuja, the Nigeria capital has ended with a call for journalists to operate within the confines of their ethical practice.

The theme of the 5th triennial delegate conference which was, “Fostering safety of Journalists and Building Synergy with Agents of the state” held at Ladi Kwali conference Hall Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Abuja.

Speaking at the event, President Muhamadu Buhari who was represented by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina said that the media has an herculean task of working for the success of democracy in Nigeria. He noted that the era of fighting the government is long over, charged media professionals to partner government for a successful administration. The President noted that media who are the watchdog of the society, should conduct themselves in an orderly manner during the election.

In his address, the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki represented by Senator Sadig called on the media and educational institutions to include parliamentary studies in their curriculum in order to create more awareness to upcoming generation.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Honourable Yakubu Dogara in his remarks commended the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in their effort to supporting democracy in Nigeria. He pledged the readiness of the House of Representatives to work towards the protection of journalists, “we will put legislation that will protect journalists”, he noted.

In his address of welcome, the national President of the NUJ, Mallam Muhamed Garba appreciated Special Guests for honouring the invitation, noted that journalists in the country have been committed to their assigned task, “Journalists are irrevocably committed to carrying out their constitutional responsibilities”. He announced that the National Board for Technical Education (NABTE) has approved the International Institute of Journalism to a Monotechnic status.
