Journalists in Akwa Ibom State have been told to adhere to their ethical Standard and report objectively in order to generate public confidence and position the profession as a dignified and potent force in the societal ranking.
The Honourable Commissioner for Works, Mr. Ephraim Akparawa Inyang-eyen gave the advice when he received the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and 2015 members of the Press Week Planning Committee led by the State NUJ Chairman, Elder Patrick Albert in his office, on a Courtesy Call.
Mr. Inyang-eyen who urged Journalists to always cross check their sources of information before publishing, said that with objective reporting the Society will be well informed, noting that publishing of falsehood always lead the masses to taking wrong decisions.
He called on the State NUJ to organise training for her members to re-orientate them in order to convey elements of truth in their reportage.
The Commissioner charged the State NUJ to partner with the Government of Governor Udom Emmanuel to speak the truth about the development his administration to the people at the grassroot, even with the use of the local languages.
The Works Commissioner who announced the donation of some laptops and support to the State Executive Council of NUJ said collaboration with Governor Udom Emmanuel in his development strides in the State will provide the needed synergy to encourage and strengthen him to do more for the State.
He directed for the immediate remedial works on the Information Drive which is in a deplorable state and called on the Works Engineers to come up with the profiling of the road within two weeks to enable the immediate commencement of the road Construction work from IBB Avenue through NUJ Press centre up to Aka-Etinan Road by the State government.
Earlier the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Elder Patrick Albert lauded the development strides of Governor Udom Emmanuel in Akwa Ibom State and pledged Journalists full support to his administration, to enable him succeed.
Elder Patrick Albert said they were at the Honourable Commissioner for Works’ Office to identify with him and to intimate him on the activities of the NUJ in the State, as well as 2015 Press week and also to solicit for his support to the Union.
He said the State Council of NUJ after thorough evaluation of the performance of Mr. Ephraim Inyang-eyen, has chosen to honour him during the week-long event of the 2015 Press week, with an award of excellence, as a mark of encouragement for him to do more.
On Issues concerning the deplorable state of the Information Drive from IBB Avenue leading to the NUJ Press centre, the NUJ State Chairman appealed to the State Government through the Honourable Commissioner Ministry of Works to re-visit the State government promise to construct the road, as this would promote professional excellence and encourage social interactions among the various stakeholders in the sector.
Elder Patrick Albert also appealed to the Works Commissioner to assist the Union in the training and retraining of members of NUJ to ensure effective and balance reportage, harping on members of the public who have suffered bad reportage from Journalists to report to the NUJ State Council for disciplinary actions.
