In a report by The Cable, the sum of N2.67 billion meant for school feeding has been traced by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to private bank accounts. This was disclosed by the ICPC chairman, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye in his keynote address at the second national summit on diminishing corruption in Abuja on Monday, September 28.
According to Owasanoye, the funds were meant for some federal colleges during the Coronavirus lockdown when children were not in school. He also added that investigations have already begun into the matter.
The ICPC chairman further explained that the anti-corruption agency under open treasury portal review which was carried out from January to August 15, 72 out of 268 ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) had cumulative infractions of up to N90 million. ICPC says N2.67bn meant for Lockdown School feeding ended up in private bank accounts. While 33 MDAs said that N4.1 billion was transferred to sub-TSA, N4.2 billion paid to individuals had no explanations that were satisfactory. The agency also discovered that a deceased senior civil servant in the ministry of agriculture allocated N2.5 billion to himself while in office. The commission recovered N16 billion from the ministry of agriculture paid into accounts of individuals for non-official purposes, including 18 buildings, 12 business premises and 25 plots of land.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that not less than N523.3 million was spent by the federal government on the school feeding programme during the Coronavirus pandemic lockdown. This was disclosed on Monday, August 3, by Sadiya Farouq, the minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management, and social development at the Presidential Taskforce briefing on COVID-19 in Abuja. The minister noted that she made the revelation in reaction to rumours and speculations around the Home Grown School Feeding Programme being peddled online.
