In furtherance of government’s effort at ensuring that residents of the state complied with development and building rules and regulations, the Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA) has demolished several illegal structures erected within the University Of Uyo College Of Health Sciences, Use Ikot Ebio.
The demolished structures included perimeter fences, residential buildings, churches and other illegally constructed structures. The demolition of the illegal structures is a follow-up to a press release from the UCCDA dated 14th November, 2014 which stated that the agency had duly marked the illegal structures since 25th September, 2014 and pasted the demolition notices on the structure walls on 23rd October, 2014.
It was however noticed that while some occupants heeded the warnings and left, others threw caution to the wind and kept erecting more unauthorized buildings on the government land.
Consequently, the chairman of the UCCDA, Mr Imoh Inyang, accompanied by the Director of Town Planning, Mr. Effiong Akpan, led a team to inspect and rid the premises of the college of such structures.
A former occupant of one of the demolished buildings, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he had no compassion for those whose properties were destroyed or kept outside due to the demolition as several warnings were given while compensations had since been paid to those who merited them. Another occupant said he would seek redress in court as the land on which he built was fraudulently sold to him.
