The Chief Medical Director m(CMD) of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Prof. Ikpeme Ikpeme has faulted the communiqué released by MDCAN (Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria) of the hospital which scored the leadership of the hospital low in some key administrative areas.
Insisting that a balance communiqué should begin with acknowledgement of efforts made and results achieved by the hospital, and then proceed to outline challenges and proffer solutions. This he said while responding to the communiqué issued following the General meeting held on 5th June, 2022, which is also making rounds in the public domain.
The CMD who stressed that his administration is not shopping for applause, however, noted that the MDCAN-UCTH throughout their communiqué never deemed it necessary to commend the management for infrastructural upgrade, equipment acquisition, successful accreditations of training programmes, introduction of new clinical services which includes spinal surgery, laparoscopic gynecological procedures, laboratory services etc.
Prof. Ikpeme reemphasized that the management came on board with a pledge to focus on four thematic areas which includes; Infrastructural development (renovations, remodeling. upgrade and new constructions), Quality service delivery, Service upgrade and innovation, Governance, human resource development and staff welfare and Security, workplace safety and the environment.
According to the CMD who is a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, his administration focused on the aforementioned areas despite lean resources amidst huge inherited debt burden, act of sabotage and rising cost of service delivery in a resource challenged environment.
He stated that “the MDCAN-UCTH communiqué is the classic example of a gruesome disservice to the hospital.” Adding that “maturity would have demanded differently since the MDCAN-UCTH leadership has many avenues of interacting with the management.” He maintained that “the current MDCAN-UCTH leadership must understand the onus that our status places on us as healthcare leaders.”
Reacting to the allegation of poor theatre service, the Chief Medical Director, stated that “the cooling system has recently been overhauled by providing new air conditioners in all the suites in the main theatre. We have procured new fully automated operating tables for all the suites; as well as orthopedic traction table, four (4) new anesthetic machines and 13 new high-end multiparameter patient monitors for the theatre.”
