Uncommon Scenario at 2015 NUJ/SWAN Games By Monday Akpan

To say or report now about the 2015 NUJ/SWAN Games seems stalled and uninteresting even as the federated chapel of the Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) maintained her supremacy during the league by winning a gold trophy at a final between her and the consolidated chapel of the state council of the NUJ.

Both teams played wonderfully well all through the full time and this effort resulted in nil-nil which culminated to penalty shoot outs whereby at the end, federated chapel trounced Consolidated chapel by three goals to one to cart away the coveted trophy donated by the state chairman of NUJ, Elder Patrick Albert.

Consolidated chapel had earlier piped Newsfront chapel by 4 goals to one to get to the final stage of the competition while the information chapel edged out Newsfront Chapel by one goal to nil in a bid for a third place in the match.

The matches which took place at the NUJ Press Centre along Information Drive off IBB Avenue, Uyo had 5 players aside and this uncommon scene added colour to the event watched by a cross section of the society.

Other uncommon scenario at the event was a novelty match by NAWOJ Babes Versus Newsfront Queens here the saying that what a man can do a woman can do even better. The female members of the gentlemen of the press proved their mettle and lived up to the expectation by displaying skills demanded by the game.

At the end of the interesting encounter, the NAWO J Babes defeated Newsfront Queens by the lone goal. It is worthy to note that Newsfront Chapel is the 13th and youngest chapel in the council and for her to participate in the event to such higher level more than what tongue can tell especially with the fact that in the male category, a female is the head coach Ugochinyere Mgbachi and the same coach in the female team despite her size, played centre forward with formidable strikes. One needs to see her in action and for sure, it is hoped that in the next series of the game, the chapel would create surprises to the amazement of the older chapels.

Other side attractions at the event were the support by members of each chapel who turned out in large numbers to cheer their chapel members who took part in the game.

Kudos to the chairman, Elder Patrick Albert, Executive members and others for their ingenuity in organizing the game to enable members enjoy themselves forgetting their beats in the office and fields so as to refresh and rebuild themselves ready for the task of building the society.

Indoor games like table tennis, scrabble, also featured at the event. The events as a whole gave both participants and non-participants alike a new ease of life especially as everyone moved about the centre freely watching the events and also listening to the underground music courtesy of the council headed by Elder Patrick Albert.

Flanked by the officials of the sports writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), sponsors of the events and Chapel Executives, the chairman, Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Elder Patrick Albert thanked members for turning out enmase to grace the occasion and supporting the participants in their various games which had given them the boost to play better and in consonance with what obtains in the spirit of sports the world over.

Elder Patrick particularly commended the sponsors of the events and hoped that in future more sponsors would identify themselves with the council to give the participants more enthusiasm which could enable them to feature in any national or state club side.
