The Executive Chairman of Uyo Local Government, Hon. Uwemedimo Udo has mandated transport agencies to relocate illegal transportation parks to government approved parks.
He gave the charge during a meeting with heads of security agencies, members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, and other stakeholders on the rising menace of illegal loading and off-loading points in Uyo metropolis.
Addressing the stakeholders, Dr. Udo emphasized the need for synergy from all to reposition commuters in the government approved motor parks. He said in doing so; roads would be decongested, giving ease to vehicular and human movement in the state capital.
Speaking further, the Chairman noted that some scrupulous elements had taken advantage of these illegal parks to cause mayhem and disrupt peace. He stressed that this would no longer be tolerated.
The Uyo Council boss urged the Police to collaborate with the road transport unions in the weeding of all illegal loading and off-loading points and relocate them to government approved parks, mandating that they should bring defaulters to book.
He further called for cooperation among the stakeholders and counseled the unionists to avoid any situation that would birth avoidable rancour, conflict, and violence in the transport sector.
The Executive Chairman reiterated his stance on ensuring safety for the people of Uyo metropolis and promised there would be a marked difference in the activities of the transport sector.
Responding, the a representative of the Police Force assured the Chairman of swift action to ensure that law and order returned to the State capital. Similarly, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers, Uyo chapter pledged the union’s support and assured that defaulters would be identified and handed over to the Security agencies.
