International Day of Older Persons: NGO Stages Public Lecture

The Centre for Rural Development and Community Transformation (CERUDECT), a non-governmental, non-sectarian, non-profit making and community-based organization based in the rural area of Odonla, Ikorodu Lagos would be holding a day public lecture in commemoration of the International Day of Older Persons of Every first of October.

Over the years,  Centre for Rural Development and Community Transformation in collaboration with development partners have been implementing massive development strategies designed to improve the standards of living of the deprived and marginalized citizens in our rural communities in Lagos and Ogun States as well as other states in Nigeria.

The vision of the grassroots organization is to develop the community members to become responsible, committed and productive members of their families, their communities and the nation at large while its mission is to empower the community members to comprehend, embrace and practice choices that would ultimately result in a healthy productive lifestyle.

The theme of the Public Lecture is Pandemics: Do They Change How We Address Age and Ageing? While the objectives of the public lecture are to: inform participants about the strategic objectives for the Decade of Healthy Ageing; raise awareness of the special health needs of older persons and of their contributions to their own health and to the functioning of the societies in which they live; increase awareness and appreciation of the role of the health care workforce in maintaining and improving the health of older persons, with special attention to the nursing profession; present proposals for reducing the health disparities between older persons in the developed and developing countries, so as to “Leave no one behind”; and increase understanding of the impact of COVID-19 on older persons and its impact on health care policy, planning, and attitudes.

The public lecture aims at convening e a gathering of all stakeholders from the community levels, Politicians and Policy Makers, Community Development Associations (CDAs) and Community Development Committees (CDCs) executives and members of the Local Government Legislators, Civil Society Organizations and the general public to promote ageing issues and see to its inclusion in government policies where need be.

According to a statement from the Project/Program Director of Center for Rural Development and Community Transformation, Mr. Olusesan Olukoya, the lecture would be an enlightenment campaign on the vital roles the communities can play to raise awareness of the condition of older people and support them throughout the aging process and also on the Importance of treating Elders with Respect. ‘’Seniors citizens have plenty experiences in life and they can teach us about enduring change and handling life’s challenges. We must treat our elders with respect, even if their bodies or minds are beginning to fail them’’ he concluded.

The One-day public Lecture is scheduled to take place on Friday, 2nd October, 2020 at the Ikorodu West LCDA, Owutu House, Ikorodu, Lagos by 10am. The Guest Speaker at the occasion will be the Lord Bishop, Ijebu ode /Remo Diocese of UAMC and the Provost of the UAM Theological College, Igbogbo, Lagos, Rt. Rev. (Dr.) Sampson Bamgbose who would do justice to the timely public lecture while the Distinguished Special Guest of Honour is the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat ; Special Guest of Honour  Hon. Babajimi Benson MHR, Representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency at the House of Representative and the Chief Host is the Chairperson of the  Ikorodu West LCDA, Hon. Princess Olajumoke Jimbo Ademehin.

Other invited dignitaries expected to grace the occasion includes the council chairmen of Ikorodu LGA, Hon Wasiu Adesina; of Igbogbo Bayeku, Olusesan Daini; Ikorodu North,  Hon. Banjo Adeola; Ijede LCDA, Hon, Fatiu Jimoh and Imota LCDA, Hon. Kunle Wasiu Agoro.

Ikorodu West LCDA legislative arms of Council Leaders of Hon. Agbaje Wasiu, Deputy leader Hon. Adeyanju Julius Tejumaiye, Hon. Moses Oluwatoyin Dada and Hon. Adebowale Aramide Kalejaiye;    Ikorodu West APC Party Chairman, Alhaji Nafiu A. Olakitan; The Commander, Lagos Neighbourhood Security Corps, Ikorodu West command, Hon. Rasaq Oseni; CDC Chairman of the Ikorodu West LCDA, Alhaji I. B. Raheem and a host of others.

Highlights of the event would be Presentation of household items as palliatives to eighty older persons to support them and also the presentation of well deserved Foremost Trailblazers Awards in Ageing Award to some dignitaries and some organizations that have done well over the years by supporting ageing developmental issues.
