Factional President, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Umar Farouk has stepped down for his opponent, Comrade Umar Barambu as President of the students’ body.
He told reporters in Abuja that he agreed to step down as factional president of NANS following the intervention of the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the crisis that rocked the association after its election in September this year.
Farouk had emerged as the president of a convention which held at the Old Parade grounds in Abuja while his major opponent, Barambu had emerged at another election site in an undisclosed location in Abuja.
Farouk said several stakeholders such as Jigawa State Governor, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar amongst others spoke to him on the need to step down as factional president for the unity of the association and the nation at large.
He said: “Ahmed Tinubu is like a father to me and so he invited me and Umar Barambu to come over to his house. He then promised to carry me along as far as his campaign is concerned. I am an APC follower and so, I did that for my party and country so that in 2023, we would have a better president.”
Farouk said it was a tough decision for him to make while the reconciliation meeting was going on, adding that he rejected some offers made by Governor Badaru during the reconciliation process and stepped down for the unity of the association.
He called his followers to sheath their sword and accept the decision he has taken to step down as factional president. Farouk declared that every student as well as stakeholders should work with Barambu as the NANS president.
