Eket Senatorial District is the most organised and disciplined zone in Akwa Ibom State. In 1999, Sen Udoma Udo Udoma from Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency was the Senator, and represented for two terms till 2007.
The baton was transferred to Eket Federal Constituency from 2007 to 2015 with two Amazon’s, Senator Eme Ekaette and Senator Helen Esuene taking a term each in quick succession. The current two terms of 2015 to 2023, is simply under the watch of Oron Federal Constituency, with Senator Akon Eyakenyi with the last lap of the baton, having picked the spoils of whatever Senator Nelson Effiong left behind in 2019.
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Mr UDOM Emmanuel who hails from Onna in Eket Federal Constituency, would have chosen to contest, but refused to do so, owing to his belief in natural justice, equity and fairness. And so the elders and leaders of the zone, in meeting ahead of the elections unanimously agreed that the senate seat goes back to Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency in 2023. Which means that Eastern Obolo and Mkpat Enin are more favoured since the pioneer senator in the current dispensation hailed from Ikot Abasi local government area?
Responsible indigenes of Eket , Onna , Esit Eket , and Ibeno are going to go all out in support of Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency like their leaders, and as usually is the case no Jupiter will fall.
In doing so, integrity, antecedence and capacity will play out. Helen Esuene, former South Eastern State First Lady, former Minister of Environment, former Minister of State for Health and Chief Executive Officer of several successful business enterprises. She was chosen because of capacity.
Akon Eyakenyi, former Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, former Minister of Lands and Housing, former Chairman of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic and renowned school teacher. Elected to perform on capacity basis and she has not disappointed. As a matter of fact, she is only time barred from a second term because of zoning.
Like I already said, Eket Senatorial District Leaders have spoken, unlike what a former Commissioner in the state once said, these Elders don’t speak from both sides of their mouth, they don’t hate development, they are not greedy and they are peace-loving. So the question then remains, who in Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency, is preferable for the red chambers in 2023?
