The increasing rates of youth unemployment in Nigeria is alarming and needs urgent attention by the different levels of government; the federal, state, and local including members of the society, to strategize means to salvage the overwhelming awkward situation in the country.
The consequence of youth unemployment have a direct negative effect not only to the affected persons but to the development and progress of government of any country. The resultant effect of these increased unemployment rate in the country includes; increase in crime rate such as robbery, rape, ritual killing, cyber crime, fraud, murder and manslanghter. Others are child abuse, burglary, arson, terrorism, violent crime and other antisocial hehaviour exhibited in the society are attributed to idleness and lack of job by the teaming and increasing population.
Nigeria’s population reached 182 million this year with more than half of its people under 35 years of age, putting a severe strain on the nation suffering from a slowing economy and declining revenue to provide enough necessities of people like schools, job creation and health care facilities among others.
The latest estimate is based on the population of 160 million recorded in the 2006 National census using an annual growth rate of 3.5 per cent weigh against other variables like rising life expectancy and a declining infant mortality rate.
In a statement credited to Mr. Ghaji Bello, Director General of the National Population Commission during an interactive session with journalists in Abuja said the implication of youths over population in Nigeria is that they are assets and the future of the country, but they are also liabilities. We need to know how to plan for the transition from youths to the next category.
