Professor Idara Akpabio holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics from the erstwhile University of Cross River State, Nigeria (1984 – 1988). He obtained M.Sc. Mineral Exploration (Geophysics Option) from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria (1990 – 1992). Later had Ph.D. in Applied Geophysics from the University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, (1995 – 1997). In 2016, he got a Distinction in the Basic Certificate Course, Word of Faith Bible Institute (WOFBI).
He has professional / Industry experience that has taken him through the Geological Laboratory, Shell Petroleum Development Company, Warri, Nigeria; Exploration Department, Shell Petroleum Development Company, Port Harcourt, Stanford University, California, USA; Southern Polytechnic State University, Atlanta, Georgia and the University of Uyo, Nigeria.
Prof. Akpabio started lecturing at the University of Uyo as a Graduate Assistant in 1990; rose through the ranks and acquired relevant experience to become Professor in 2010. He was acting Head, Department of Physics, University of Uyo (2011 – 2015). He is a past Dean, Faculty of Science, past Chairman, Committee of Deans, University of Uyo, and former member of the Governing Council of the same University.
He is the Coordinator, Advanced Space Technology Applications Laboratory, Uyo. He has been a visiting lecturer in the Department of Physics: University of Calabar, Veritas University, Obehie; Rivers State University of Science and Technology, PH; CRS University of Technology, Calabar; Federal University, Ndufu Alike, Ikwo, Ebonyi State and others. He has been on National Universities Commission accreditation team to various Universities.
Prof. Idara Akpabio has also served as External Examiner in various Universities; Rivers State University of Science and Technology, PH, University of Port Harcourt, University of Calabar, Michael Opara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Osun State College of Education, Illaro Ogun, Osun State; among others. He is a member of several professional bodies including: Nigerian Institute of Physics, Physics Writers Series Creation and Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists.
He has authored and published several text books in Physics and Geophysics. He has about 100 academic articles to his credit. He is the 57th Inaugural Lecturer of the University of Uyo. He is also a Pastor in the Living Faith Church, married and blessed with children.
