By Saviour Ekpe

Uruan local government has for some time now witnessed some security challenges owing to its proximity to waterways that enroute Cross River State and the Republic of Cameroun. Apart from its internal security challenges, which include the alleged killing of a female job seeker and the likes. This is not far from the fact that every community has its peculiar challenges.

In the midst of all this, the eagle-eye Commissioner of Police, CP Amiengheme Andrew spotted a gallant, confident, young and unassuming, dogged, brilliant, a master strategist in administration and criminal engineering Superintendent of Police, SP Felix Ekpoudom and sent him on a rescue mission in Uruan as DPO (Divisional Police Officer) with a mandate to adopt his tactical approach to burst criminal syndicate in the area.

SP Felix Ekpoudom, nephew to the retired DIG Udom Ekpoudom, upon assumption of duty sometime in the mid-November, 2021, a renowned community leader in the area (name withheld by us) said that the new DPO was greeted by wild grasses at the Divisional Headquarters in the popular Nwaniba village that houses the Ibom Icon Hotel and Golf Course (formerly Le Meridien), Nwaniba Beach; the emerging Resort Carabana Owned by one of the top-notch politicians in the state; an abandoned Nigeria Immigration Service office and other places of interest, waded into immediate action by carrying out prompt renovation activities of cutting down the wild grasses, lighting up the premises, repainting and re-equipping the entire station, including the entire gatehouse to meet up with the 21st century policing. In order to close the assess point of kidnapers who kidnap their victims and pass through the place to the waterways, mounted heavy concrete drums at the middle of the road and placed a 24-hour-surveillance armed policeman on a routine stop and search, whenever there is a suspected move.

Century Newsfront also learned that a series of peace agreements have been caused to sign by youth leaders of various communities while a series of arrests have been made such as notorious kidnappers, cultists, etc. and have been made to face the wrath of the law. SP Felix Ekpoudom, a graduate of the Federal University of Technology (FUTO), Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria.

A close friend to SP Felix Ekpoudom who pleaded anonymously told Century Newsfront that the DPO always re-echoed a piece of advice given to him by the retired DIG Ekpoudom that if he wants to succeed in his chosen career as a policeman, he should rather “focus on his job than money”, noting that money will finish and evaporate but the job will give him all the money that he wants.

It could be recalled that SP Felix Ekpoudom was reportedly fed inmates on Christmas day. Though the said initiative was criticized by an individual, a legal practitioner who spoke to Century Newsfront on anonymous capacity commended the DPO for what he described as an ingenuity, the legal luminary noted that people always write off and stigmatize anybody that has been arrested by the police, added that nobody is found guilty, irrespective of the alleged crime or allegation until such is proved so by a court of competent jurisdiction.
