By Saviour Ekpe
The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has begun the process of creating more State Constituencies for the State Assembly.
In a motion, raised by a member representing Ikono/Ini State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Asuquo Nana Udo during plenary today, called for the creation of more state constituencies as the present status of the Assembly does not reflect the overall interest of the people of the state.
Members who deliberated in support of the motion described it as apt and very timeous as it will allow individual local government areas to have separate state constituencies.
Speaking in favour of the bill, the member representing Uyo State Constituency, Hon. Asuquo Uwemedimo Dianabasi while appreciating the mover of the motion noted that Uyo local government with over 4,000 (four thousand) voting strength needs additional state constituency to carter for the overall interest of the area. He called for members to support the bill and throw their weight behind additional state constituency for Uyo.
Responding, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong commended the resilience of members in the debate and added that the eighth assembly, being a people-oriented one will do everything possible to ensure that what belongs to the people are made possible.
The speaker, however, directed the clerk of the House to write to National Assembly, INEC and other relevant institutions to ensure that additional State constituencies are created for the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.
