Don Calls For Intensive Computer Education in Primary, Secondary Schools

A don in the Department of Communication Arts, University of Uyo, Dr. Nsikanabasi Nkana has called for intensive teaching and learning of computer in Primary and Secondary Schools in Nigeria.

Dr. Nkana who is an Associate Professor of Communication and Acting Head, Department of Communication Arts, made the call recently while addressing students of Wilcon Comprehensive High School, Ibiakpan number two, Abak Local Government Area who visited the department on an excursion. He stated that every activity in the world today anchors on the knowledge of computer, stressing that lack of basic knowledge of computer renders graduates from any discipline unemployable.

The head of department commended the students for coming to acquaint themselves with the programmes offered by the department as this would afford them to plan early for admission if they are interested in the department.

The Associate Professor listed some courses offered in the department to include Print Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, Advertising, Public Relations, Business Communication. Others courses according to him are Traditional Communication, Organizational Communication and Non-violence Communication.

The HOD also stated that plans were in top gear to change the department to a full scale school of communication since the department has become cumbersome and overloaded with programmes. Also speaking, a senior lecturer and secretary, Department of Communication Arts Board, Dr. Nsikak Idiong said that the digitization of things has made the department to be upgraded to computer-based –programmes, pointing out that no student would function optimally in any programme of the department without basic knowledge of computer.

On his part, the Proprietor of Wilcon Comprehensive High School, Mr. Emmanuel William thanked the HOD and other staff of the department for accepting the students on excursion to the department. The excursion featured visit to the department’s television studio, radio studio, advertising studio, news room and photo-journalism laboratory. The students were later treated to sumptuous entertainment by the department.
